It’s September and whether we like it or not…fall is creeping up on us!
It might seem like time is not real this year because of the pandemic and being indoors for the majority of the year, but we’re constantly being reminded that seasons are still happening. The nights get longer, then shorter. Leaves grow, and then fall. Time moves on. But instead of being sad that summer is over, let’s celebrate the start of fall and all of its joy!
More than anything for us, fall is the season of incredible produce because it’s the season of harvest! Pumpkins, apples, pears, grapes, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, sweet potato… the list goes on and on. But nothing says fall more than cinnamon and the color orange, am I right?
So since we’re at the end of summer and just hearing the very first whispers of fall, we wanted to make something that still embodies the summer but hints at the excitement of fall flavors. Enter: the fall-inspired smoothie bowl!
I don’t know about you, but I’m still eating smoothie bowls because it’s still hot and humid here in NYC. “So how could I make a fall-inspired smoothie bowl?” I thought.
To get an orange base, I added sweet potato to frozen bananas and mango to give it a bright orange-yellow color but still added sweetness. Sweet potatoes are so sweet they’re basically a fruit! The base also includes cinnamon, of course, for that unmistakeable spiced flavor.
For the toppings, we added fresh figs because they’re everywhere now that they’re in season here and they’re so delicious. Figs are also a great transitional fruit from summer to fall (fig tarts, anyone?). We also added blackberries to keep that dark fruit theme going, but you can substitute any fruit you want here. A great addition to this bowl would be dates, for example, to give it a delicious caramel-like flavor. Lastly, of course, is the component that no breakfast in our house ever goes without: homemade granola. If you want the recipe for how we make our granola click here.
Serves 1
Peel and cut the sweet potato in large chunks and add to a stemer basket over boiling water. Steam for 10 minutes, or until nice and soft. Remove from heat and let cool.
Add bananas, mango, cinnamon, and cooled sweet potato to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. This may take a while if your banana and mango are really frozen, but keep pulsing and scraping down the sides of the container until a homogenous mix is formed.
Transfer mixture into your serving bowl and top with your toppings of choice. We like fresh figs, blackberries, homemade granola, and dates.
